In a car, even in inclement weather, you’re protected from the elements, sitting down, and comfortable. Maybe you’ve got your favorite music on, or the game, or some other audio. What could possibly be so important in your life that you insist on making someone wait in the rain while you gain less than 30 seconds by not stopping? If the answer is, “I never thought about how incredibly selfish that is”, you have time to correct this. Unless you’re speeding to an emergency, the only other answer is spelled “I’m an asshole and proud of it”.

Does this model translate to a surprising popular American presidential candidate? I think it does. And unfortunately, to “many, many people” (to quote that person) are made in that mold.

Forget politics. If more people thought about anything but themselves, the world would improve considerably. It’s likely that with a little more empathy, less people would kill themselves and less would die at others’ hands.
