We always read through our own filters and prejudices. My understanding of the editorial is that (according to the author) there has been an over reaction by the French to pretend they are not bothered by the refusal to assimilate, when in fact this is counterproductive to both sides. The best example one hears of this kind of thing is when Air France was told by Syria that all female crew had to cover their hair when in their country. If that is respect for the culture, then why did Rome have to cover the statues for visitors out of respect. The impression is that only one side is getting “respect”. The visiting Iranian president wanted a wine-free dinner with the French president with Halal meat. The dinner was canceled in the end, after refusing to not serve wine. This kind of political bullshit is common, but when it touches on religion, it becomes a sensitivity issue. If there’s one thing CH does not express, it is sensitivity.
