How to Become Beautiful From the Inside Out
It’s not as hard as you think…
If you feel like you spend way too much on beauty, don’t worry! In comparison to the rest of the population, you don’t. According to a study by Groupon, the average woman will spend $225,360 during her lifetime on products and services meant to enhance her appearance. Men, on the other hand, spend an average of $175,000 over the course of their lifetime.
Those numbers may seem like hyperbole but if you break down and tally the cost of each individual product or service (e.g. hair cut, make-up, facial, etc.), you can see how it can all add up. What if there was a way to improve your beauty without spending all that money? Science tells us there is!
It’s as simple as drinking more water! A study conducted by researchers from Spain and Portugal found that increasing your water intake can leave your skin looking younger and healthier.
Scientists divided a group of 49 healthy females into two subgroups according to their current water consumption habits. Group 1 normally consumed less than 3200ml of water a day while Group 2 usually consumed more.
Both groups were instructed to drink an extra two liters of water a day. Measurements were taken of the study participants’ skin physiology at set intervals throughout the 30-day duration of the study. Researchers looked for changes in elasticity, elastic function, viscoelastic ratio, and maximum extensibility — measurements that determine health and fitness of skin.
The findings of this study confirm what most people generally suspected — better hydration leads to healthier skin. An even more surprising revelation resulting from the study is that individuals who normally don’t drink that much water (Group 1) saw the most benefit when they increased their water intake. These results are fantastic news for those that do not drink enough water throughout the day as they have the most potential for improvement!
Drinking water does what special moisturizers and creams can’t do — hydrate your skin from the inside out. As this study proves, hydration is crucial to the elasticity of your skin. As we age, our skin naturally loses some of this elasticity; this is why we get wrinkles. Thus, restoring some of this elasticity will result in more youthful looking skin.
Does showering in water help your skin too?
This study shows that ingesting more water will benefit the health of your skin, but what about showering in water? For people who have certain skin conditions like eczema or acne, this can depend on the type of water. Though scientists are not sure why, water high in dissolved calcium and magnesium (hard water) can exacerbate symptoms of eczema. Also, the chlorine/chloramine normally present in tap water can further compound the problem.
For those who suffer from common acne, chlorine can dry out your skin and strip it of needed oils. Your body replenishes this oil, but the problem is it produces too much of it and you may go from dry skin to oily skin. This extra oil can clog pores and cause acne to worsen.
With that said, not all water has this effect on your skin. Soft, refined water can actually nourish and hydrate your skin upon contact. This is because refined water has very low levels of dissolved solids and chlorine — two things that can make certain skin conditions worse.
Nuvia Water Technologies is a California-based maker of whole-house water filtration and softening systems. Judging by the dozens of reviews left by customers, the general consensus seems to be that showering in water refined through a Nuvia System is great for your skin.
Many report healthier, softer, and rejuvenated skin. Some customers even saw symptoms of their skin conditions dramatically improve or completely vanish over time!
This is because Nuvia systems greatly reduce the presence of magnesium and calcium in the water supply. Just as important, they filter out chlorine and thousands of other contaminants. What’s left is pure, clean, soft water that feels silky smooth on your skin and won’t dry it out.
