Life is full of twists and turns. Unexpected surprises, people, and events. It’s terrifying, exciting, depressing, and full of joy. But how does one navigate this crazy road map called life? It’s simple really… Passion.

As individuals, it’s our passions that drive us. Millions of people are miserable every day at jobs they are not passionate about. They sit and day dream about doing anything else. They have aspirations and dreams that will often never be fulfilled. To me, that is one of life’s greatest tragedies.

Our passions give us drive, purpose, and meaning. It motivates us to get out of bed in at 4 in the morning with urgency. It’s what drives a person to work 50, 60, 70 hours a week without feeling burnt out. Passion is what brings joy to work, and makes work feel like play. And I hold to what I think is a rather uncommon belief: That we can choose to be passionate about anything.

Let me clarify.

What I am not saying is that I can wake up and decide to be passionate about math, for example. I hate math. Loathe it, even. But what I am saying, is I could work every day in a career doing math with passion. How, you might ask? Because I know what drives me as an individual. I know what I’m passionate about deep down at the core, and I can direct that passion at any task. Here’s what I’m passionate about:

  • My faith — I believe I was created with a purpose and that I am called to do everything with excellence.
  • My family — I want to be the best possible husband to my wife, and the best father to my son.
  • My freedom — I live in what I consider to be the greatest nation on earth. Free to do what I want, when I want, and it would be a disservice to freedom and those who have sacrificed to afford me this freedom if I didn’t pursue life with passion.

Search your heart and find your passions. What things are always on your mind? Whatever twist or turn life throws my way, I choose to be passionate about overcoming it, and to do so with joy. What will you choose?
