2017 Census Results

Another year gone by, another RAOA survey! Thank you to everyone that took part.

Let us know what you think in the Reddit comments after!

In total we received a total of 286 responses this year.

Exactly 66.7% of the users claimed to be Female, continuing a trend of the sub being dominated by the XX Chromosomes. 30.5% of users responded as Male, leaving around 3% for the other responses. Some of the custom answers included:

  • Cyborg
  • Genderqueer
  • Meat popsicle
  • Agender
  • Demi-female
  • Gender fluid

Unsurprisingly, most RAOA users are from USA, with Canada and UK following up. Other countries represented were India, Germany (wooh!), Puerto Rico, Norway, Australia, Phillippines, Italy, Mexico, Romania, Sealand, The Netherlands, Israel, South Africa, France and of course, Ireland.

Sadly, that leaves only around 10% of users coming from Europe, despite it being the far superior continent.

How how old is the average person you talk to on RAOA every day? We can now confirm that the typical user is aged between 25–34 (some people call that “young adult”, others “middle-aged”. Nearly a third of users are under the age of 25 (oh to be young and free again)!

On average, females users tend to be slightly younger than males. About 1/3rd of the females (and thus around 22% of the sub) are aged 18–24. However, there are more females in the higher age brackets than males.

Last year saw the majority of people using their computer to browser reddit, but this year phone users now account for 52% of viewers (as their primary viewing device).

For some users, meetups are the life and soul of RAOA. Rumours tell of some travel hungry people that have attended 10+! Most of us prefer to stay behind our keyboards, phones and tablets though: only 15% of users have gone to a meetup.

Last year the smartphone question included Windows phone as a selectable option. This year I left it off the list, but that didn’t stop one poor soul from owning up to their poor life choices. Interestingly, the share of iPhone users has increased from 36% last year to 46% this year! #iphoneisking.

Ah, the question I suspect a lot of people are intrigued about. Over half of the sub is either in a relationship or married. 35% of the users are single, roughly the same as last year.

Of the females, about 28% are single. Of the males, nearly 50% are single. However, since there are more females than males on the sub, in absolute numbers, there are 10 more single females than males :). Good news!

What do people do to earn their precious gifting money? Unsurprisingly, nearly half of the sub is in full time employment (which makes sense considering the average age of an RAOA user). Of the free input users, one is totally batman while the other is just “losing at life”. We’re sorry ❤

Amazingly, over 10% of the sub has (or claims to have) gifted over 50 times! That’s a stunning display of generosity. Naturally, the users that have been on the sub the longest have gifted the most, and the people who are newest have gifted the least.

The rules of the sub are something we’ve often struggled with a lot as a moderation team. We want the sub to be a fun place for everyone, but it can be hard to make everyone happy. Even the individual moderators often have very different ideas for the sub (which is a good thing!).

Thankfully, the vast majority of people think our rules are just right in terms of strictness. We’re happy to hear that ❤

Of the people that didn’t think the rules were “just right”, there was a completely even split between “Too strict” and “Too lenient”.

I screwed up the next question, and forgot to make it multi choice, so I can’t make any meaningful comparison to last year. Either way, 1/3rd of the sub thinks that the hangout threads are the best type of thread on the sub. I guess that means we’ll keep them coming. The fact that contest and gifted threads show up so low in the last really show how RAOA is more of a friendly community than anything else.

Between the genders, males slightly prefer discussions over hangout threads. Females tend to enjoy activities more than males.

Younger folks also tended to prefer discussions more.

A new question for this year: How long have people stuck around on the sub?

Unsurprisingly, 1/5th of the current user base has been around for less than a month. I would guess quite a lot of people intro, stick around for a few days, and then don’t come back. Keep in mind that quite a few of these survey results might be from people that aren’t active anymore, which may slightly skew the data from what you would expect.

Last year 48% of people said that dogs are the best kind of animal. Okay, that’s not entirely true. The question asks “Do you prefer cats or dogs?”, but some people just have to answer something different! Anyway, this year, the percentage of dog lovers is down two percentage points. Slowly the cat master race shall come to dominate.

This was the question with the most custom entered answers, GOD WHY IS IT SO HARD TO JUST SAY CATS OR DOGS GUYS.

Okay, this question was better because there wasn’t any custom choices. You have all demonstrated terribly well that free will is a bad idea.

Thankfully there is still some justice left in the world, because 61.6% of you successfully chose the correct answer.

What subreddit do you spend the most time on?

In this question we learn how many different ways there are of typing RAOA or Random Acts of Amazon that some poor soul has to count up manually.

Most of the answers were so vague there’s not really much useful information here. Big shoutout to whoever said, “I kind of browse here and there”. Nevertheless, RAOA was the most popular answer. AskReddit is pretty popular too. No, I’m not going to list the NSFW 18+ subs you entered.

How would you improve RAOA?

Only 128 people answered this, which means that over half you think the sub is perfect. Yay! Here’s some of the suggestions, and our (mostly my) answers:

You should make me a mod!

Too bad the survey was anonymous. Sorry about that!

You should ban people that cause drama or make trouble!

Drama and trouble making is entirely subjective, and we try to avoid having to judge things like that. If you’re not fond of what someone posts, feel free to block them on reddit!

Less rules about being nice to people

We only have one rule about this, and we’ve found it fairly useful to have.

Mods should have less favourites and be fair to everyone!

We certainly do have favourites, but only as users of the sub. Just like you, we participate, make friends, etc. The mod team consists of a people from all backgrounds and personality types, and most decisions are made after a discussion between multiple mods. This removes the possibility for favouritism.

There should be more threads, more activities, more discussions.

We agree! Feel free to jump in and post/start them as long as they follow the rules :)

There should be an RAOA discord server!

Good idea! There is: https://www.reddit.com/r/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon/comments/6lwgel/activity_introducing_the_new_official_discord/?ref=search_posts

Limit how many times someone can be gifted.

We don’t want to try and prevent anyone from gifting how they want.

More mod mud wrestling!

We’ll get right on that.

There should be a group chat where we can get to know people better

Either our Discord or Slack server is great for that!

Always make the “o” lowercase: RAoA.

We do what we want.

Morthy would post a daily tutu photo.

We don’t want to scare everyone away.

Would it be possible to search wishlists for specific items?

Yes! This is already possible, check out the “User tools” link on the sidebar.

Add mods who care about the subreddit

Obviously we do things like this survey to show our disdain and hatred for everyone.

And lastly and more importantly:

I’m flattered guys, really!
