Indian weddings come with an ever-attached tag of fun along. The events are lively and full of energy with ceremonies that add to the amazing rejoice of the whole wedding mood. Especially Punjabi weddings are one of the craziest ones in the whole Indian wedding plankton. From poignant moments of sangeet, Haldi, Mehandi, to that of kalire ceremony as well as the authentic bridal jewelry, chooda, there is never a dull moment ever.

So, what does this ritual of kalire speak about?

Punjabi bridal kalire is a cultural variant that is unique to Punjabi weddings and can be often seen worn by the bride attached to her bridal bangles during the ceremony. These are dangling accessories that are made of a colorful and golden metallic foil. This is later attached to the chooda.

An evolution in design

With evolution and experimentation happening continuously with bridal jewelry, nowadays, kalire also consists of tiny buds and beads made of organza, charms, big sized thread kalire, and pearl beaded chains. Nowadays the brides have also started opting for unconventional designs like thread kalire, floral designed kalire and bejeweled Punjabi kaleere.

A quick run through the legend

Legend has it that, unlike modern-day danglers, the traditional Punjabi kaleere was umbrella-shaped that was tied by the bride by her siblings and uncles as a token of blessing and prosperity. These were often made of silver, gold or strings of dry fruits which also served as a snack on the way to the wedding hall for the bride.

Modern-day desi style

Inspired by many Bollywood big fact weddings, the kalire ceremony today comprises of the bride tossing the kalire over the head of unwed girls who are next in line for a wedding or those who are single. This falling on their head is considered as an auspicious sign meaning she is next in the queue. Sounds fun right?

Well, there are many different choices in the present time to fascinate during the wedding. This calls for plenty of photos and fun-filled moments.

Another part of the story

Along with kalirey, Punjabi Chuda also plays an integral and significant role in Punjabi ceremonies. It is an essential accessory worn by brides for a period of 40 days to 1.5 years. Coming in a set of 21 red and white bangles they are a symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity for the bride in the future.
