Hybrid Identities

With an amalgam of five pictures, I aimed to represent seven identities which I believe are elements of my own personal hybrid identity.
Such identities are as follows:
- Human
- Man
- Asian
- Filipino
- Son
- Student
- Atenean
These aspects of the self are both global and local.
The global aspect of the self pertains to elements of my identity that can be identified with similar individuals around the world.
The local aspect of the self pertains to elements of my identity that I believe are more definite and prominent in my local culture, in the Philippines.
Human
A universal component among all people is to identify one’s self as a human, and to be able to connect with others on that premise. As such, the totality of all the different facial features aims to represent a human figure. My global identity as a human comes with certain assumptions, which hold true in most instances: human rights, a sense of culture, and a sense of mortality. My identity as a human was shaped by all my interactions with other people, and by my understanding of concepts related to humans, such as humanity and life.
Man
The amalgam of faces is comprised of male faces, representative of my identity as man. I used the imagery of a pencil moustache, because it is traditionally a masculine feature. My identity as a male was and still is highly influenced by prominent male figures in my life, such as my father, and by media portrayals of masculinity.
Asian
Being a born and raised in the Philippines, that automatically identifies me as an Asian. I used the stereotypical image of a pale face with glasses to represent the idea of an asian. My identity on a regional scale
Filipino
My identity as a Filipino was given to me as I was born, but I believe that it was a concept that was learned. The main factor that contributed to my identity as a Filipino would certainly have to be Filipino culture, as the present culture in Philippine society has affected me, and taught me, all my life. I opted to use the face on the left to allude to my Filipino identity; the face belongs to a popular Filipino comedian, Mikey Bustos.
Son
My understanding of the identity of a son, of a child, is quite straightforward. I understand my responsibilities as a child of my parents, and the values and expectations that come with it. A feature of this is a deep sense of gratitude, to my parents for everything they have done for me. I opted to use the pencil moustache to represent being a son, because it is a symbol of masculinity, but not one that is developed to a fuller extent, such as the imagery of a full beard.
Student
The square academic cap is used to allude to my identity as a student. My identity as a student was primary developed by my life environment and occupation so far. Generally, the identity of a student is an individual who is preparing him/herself for their future, for their careers, by learning. I believe that I fit in that description.
Atenean
Identifying myself as an Atenean is still in its development, as I am still only around a month into the university. I opted to use the Ateneo symbol on the hat to represent being an Atenean. I’m still learning of the functions and connotations of Ateneo culture, as well as what it means to be an Atenean. I believe that the main factor that will influence this specific identity will be my experiences with anything and anyone related to the school. This will certainly influence how I will react, accept, or even reject the identity placed upon me.
