A 44-year-old teacher from East Harlem. A bartender from the Bronx. The first openly gay African-American to win a seat in Congress. These are the faces of the Democratic Party in the year 2020 as Jamaal Bowman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Mondaire Jones easily defeated their establishment challengers on Tuesday of last week. These were remarkable as they were all running against established figures in the party, some of whom had been fixtures for the Democrats for decades. Yet, the establishment’s hopes of bringing a progressive insurgency to heel died with a whimper as they saw upset after upset take place.

There are a lot of terrible politicians in the United States. It seems like Washington, DC is just a cesspool of horrible, corrupt politicians who really don’t care about you in any way. However, if you were to ask me who is the worst politician in America, the pièce de résistance, the cherry on top of the festering mountain of human garbage that is American politics, the answer couldn’t be more clear: it’s none other than Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and, funnily enough, a lot of people agree with my assessment. As of my writing this, McConnell stands at a…

I was a freshman in college when Ferguson happened. I vividly remember walking around my dorm and seeing rows of doors with the words “Black Lives Matter” written on them. I must admit I was confused as to why everyone was so up in arms about the murder of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, partly because I lived most of my life in one of the most violent countries in the Western Hemisphere. I’m not kidding here when I say that, when I lived there, Brazil had more homicides than the next 27 countries combined, one-fifth of all homicides were…

Welcome back to my ongoing series on high-profile congressional races. Today, we’re going down to the great state of West Virginia to talk about perhaps one of the most interesting Senate elections of the year, a race that has the chance of sending shockwaves through the American political system not seen since the election of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018. In one corner, we have incumbent Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito, and in the other, we have her likely Democratic opponent, Paula Jean Swearengin. …

Throughout all the chaos of the coronavirus epidemic, you may be forgiven if you forgot that there is, in fact, an election happening in America this year. Actually, to be more specific, there are multiple elections happening this year. As is the case every two years, every seat in the House of Representatives as well as numerous high profile Senate and Gubernatorial seats are up for grabs this year, and unfortunately these elections don’t really get the attention they deserve. …

When former Vice President Joe Biden officially became the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States a month ago, progressives felt incredibly discouraged and understandably pessimistic about the election in November. According to a recent poll, a slim majority of Sanders voters are either committed or considering voting third party in the general election, and many others have expressed interest in sitting out the election, including former Press Secretary for the Sanders campaign Briahna Joy Gray. …

It’s been another extremely long week in America. The coronavirus continues to rip through the country and our leaders seem like they’re doing everything in their power to screw this up as much as humanly possible. President Donald Trump has repeatedly downplayed the threat posed by the virus, refused to wear a face mask for fear of “looking ridiculous,” suggested that Americans inject or ingest household cleaning fluid in order to disinfect the body, and his Vice President has refused to self-quarantine despite the fact that multiple people in his inner circle have tested positive for the coronavirus. It seems…

Breaking news: America is polarized. It seems more and more that Americans can’t seem to agree on much policy-wise and, on a national level, the elected representatives of the Democratic and Republican Parties are diametrically opposed in virtually every way. Most votes in Congress are usually along party lines, with the occasional Joe Manchin or Susan Collins crossing over to vote with the other side. Because of this, the Senate especially has gone from the world’s greatest platform for debate to a place where legislation goes to die. Very few bills actually get to the President’s desk anymore, the filibuster…

During the coronavirus pandemic we’re currently experiencing, there have been numerous media figures pushing unproven conspiracy theories and disinformation about the disease. At the beginning of the outbreak, for example, right-wing radio host Alex Jones claimed that he had developed toothpaste that “kills the whole SARS-corona family at point-blank range,” which was so false that New York Attorney-General Letitia James sent out a cease-and-desist order to Jones to force him to stop selling it. Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Rush Limbaugh, who consistently pulls in 15 million listeners a week on his radio show, also spouted blatant disinformation about the…

In the time of coronavirus, we’ve all seen a ton of television ads from brands trying to capitalize on this uncertain time. It seems like we can’t turn on our television sets without being bombarded by brands trying to show us how woke and compassionate they are. This rings true not only for our favorite brands, but also for our favorite political figures.Over the past few months, world leaders from all sides of the political spectrum have tried to offer words of encouragement about how we're going to get through this, how this will leave us stronger as a nation…
