I think the most effective way to advocate for higher taxes is to donate, along with other like-minded individuals, to a trust fund that will be transferred to the government as long as the political goals of the fund are accomplished and then publicizing the hell out of it. This would prove especially effective at the local and state level, because politicians could say “we could do x, y, z with the money in that fund, plus even more stuff if we can raise taxes!

It’s just an idea, but I think it’d be more effective than electing officials who will never admit, publicly, that they want to raise taxes (unless the taxes are targeted towards a politically unpopular group like the undeserving rich, illegal immigrants, gamblers, and smokers).
