The real minimum wage is zero dollars per hour. If the price of legal labor is too high, companies are going to consolidate positions and lay off the workers who aren’t productive enough to justify keeping them on the payroll with a high legal minimum.

15 dollars an hour is close to the median wage in a lot of states. Pegging a Federal wage floor to that level, and you would see a large swath of the workforce either unemployed or reclassified as independent contractors (to whom minimum wage does not apply to and they have even less legal protections).
