There’s actually a very practical reason why hunter-gatherer societies tend to emphasize communalism and sharing: effort and skill are less important than circumstance/luck when it comes to determining any given day’s output, which varies wildly day-to-day for an individual but is more stable when considered as a group. Individual survival is maximized when everybody shares.
