With being a part of the social network, you are putting almost all of your information out there, especially with the applications that you use on your phone. Sometimes or most of the time the applications that you download will always give you a notification if it can have access to your camera, microphone or any other data. Also the type of content you display on social media if you don’t private your account will be there out in the open for everyone to look at… if that’s what you want. But keep in mind that others might screenshot, and save it for inappropriate use. Here I will talk about some of the ways you can configure your privacy settings on Snapchat in order for you as the individual to be safe in a global network community.

The Guide To Privacy Settings : SNAPCHAT

When you first sign up for snapchat, by default your privacy setting on who can look at your snaps/stories and who can contact you directly is set to only ‘Friends’. To edit your privacy settings :

  1. First to get to the settings icon you are gonna tap the top right-hand corner of the Profile screen. ( The icon will look like this ⚙ )
  2. Scroll down to the section of “Who Can” and tap one of the options listed under that subcategory. There are 3 options you can choose from which are :
  • Contact Me: Option between who can contact you directly with Snaps, Chats, calls, etc. (You can choose between Everyone or Friends)
  • View My Story: The option of who can view your Story. If you want to block specific people from seeing your story even if they are friends you simply tap on ‘Custom’ and pick from your list of contacts on who you want to block. ( Everyone, Friends, or Custom)
  • My Location: This option updates your location while you have Snapchat open. There is an option that you can use called ‘Ghost Mode’ where none of your friends can see your location. ( You still have the options to choose between Friends or Everyone)
  • See Me In Quick Add: This option helps friends find each other on Snapchat. This is used if you share mutual friends or another connection.

3. One really important rule when it comes to Snapchat is make sure you don’t send anything that is explicit or inappropriate. Despite the fact that if your sending a 3 second pic, keep in mind that it never disappears. Snapchat’s privacy policy in a recent update now has the rights to keep and own images/videos even after they disappear. Snapchat has full ownership of your content, and they can post it if they want to.

4. Lastly with Snapchat there comes third party applications for example bitmoji, where you basically create a character or avatar that looks like you and it becomes your profile picture. It is very important to check what applications you are using with Snapchat. Some of the applications could ruin the privacy you have on Snapchat because they need your login details to perform such tasks.
