1973–74 Public Sector had 13.13 million employees rising to 19.56 million in 1996–97 now down to 17.61 million in 2011–12
1973–74 Private Sector had 6.79 million employees rising to 12 million in 2011–12 .
That means in about 38 years Organised Employment increased from 19.92 million to 29.61 million , about 10 million , or about 50% .
Public Sector is down from providing 66% of the jobs to 59% . It was almost 70% in Public Sector in 1996–97 .
Indian population in 1971 was 567 million and in 2011 it was 1221 million . The population increase was about 115% .
So Organised Employment has not kept track with population increase .
So Organised Employment has been decreasing in India as percentage of the population. From about 3.5% in early 1970’s to 2.4% now.
We had about 500 million workforce in 2011 and 225 million in 1971 as about 40% of India works .
Even then the Unorganised and Informal Employment is what runs India .
Small Farmers , Small Retailers , Small Businesses and Small Services .
8.8% in 1970’s to 6% is now Organised Employment .
India is Self Employed Nation now more than ever .
