The very first step towards success in any occupation is to become interested in it.

William Osler

Dale Carnegie wrote a book name is “How to Win Friends & Influence People.” I read its first chapter “Do This And You’ll Be Welcome Anywhere” in which Dale shared his life experiences with the focus on if human show his interest in others then he can win the hearts of people by doing this small thing.

Dale said that you can make friends in just 2 months by becoming interested in other people than you can make friends in two years by trying to other people interest in you.

He give some tips in book to make a friend by showing your interests in them.Firstly, he said that we make friends by greeting them with enthusiasm.By giving example he said that in companies call operators trained how to talk with customers in a polite tone so that customers think that they are interested in them and in this way they grasp the tension of customers. Secondly, he said you never need to read book on psychology to make a friends, by just showing your interest in them you make a loyal and good friends. In whole our life we think that by making people interesting in you, you make friends but the reality is that people are only interest in themselves. He also mention when you see a group picture, you see yourself in picture first. Thirdly, he said that you can grasp the more attention and cooperation of other people by just showing your interests in them. Finally, he said that it is two way process means the person which is receiving attention, also show his interest in next people.

For confirmation, whether it works or not, I applied these principals of Dale. And surprisingly, it worked. When i talked with my friend, four days ago and asked about her daily routine, what she is doing these days , how her internship is going , what,s new things she learn there…. etc. Believe me by asking just few questions, she was so comfortable that she told me every thing about her difficulties which she was facing. Then i gave some suggestions to her about handling and how to cope up with new environment. After this conversation, I could easily imagine about her relaxation, her feeling of calmness.

In another occasion, when i congratulate my auto fellow on getting Government job. And when i asked about her job, what type of difficulties she was facing right now. She was so calm in telling me that work load on her so much and training sessions are prolonged, hectic that she was in miserable condition these days due to work load.

One example more, in which i talked to my colleague. I asked about her last trip to Islamabad experience, daily routine.Firstly, she described her whole journey to Islamabad and then she was start to tell her hectic routine how she managed her family whole day. What type of households or tasks she performed in a day and no one help her . Then i relaxed her by telling that she is doing marvelous job by helping her family.

Moral of the story is that people are only interested in their selves as Dale said and i experienced it as well as i explained earlier. But i just to want to say that when i talked to my friends and showing interest in them they just start to talk about their selves and did not show so much interest about asking my routine, my difficulties. So it also showed that people are only and only interested in their selves. Their first and last priority their selves , noting more, nothing less.As Ambrose Bierce said that,

“A person more interested in himself than in me”
