Weddings in Wales: Couple marry after sweet proposal

If you tied the knot like Rachel and Kristoffer, we’d love to share in your celebrations .

To take part, just fill in the simple form at the end of this story. And if you’re from the South Wales Echo area, you will be featured in our newspaper, too.

It doesn’t matter where you married, as long as one of you is Welsh or you live in Wales.

This week’s couple live in Treherbert, Rhondda.

The couple

Rachel Evans, 31, a chartered legal executive from Pentre, Rhondda, and Kristoffer “Geesy” Rees, 37, a factory worker from Ton Pentre, Rhondda. They live in Treherbert, Rhondda.

The venue

The couple married at Pencoed House Estate, Capel Llanilltern, on March 29.

How they met

Kristoffer has been friends with Rachel’s brother-in-law, Johnny Cast, since the age of 11. According to Rachel, Kristoffer is well known for his “unique” dance moves after a few drinks. She said: “Many a Saturday night I would stumble across Geesy in either the New Inn or Fagins [both in Ton Pentre] performing a variety of weird and wonderful dance moves and truth be told, I thought he was a bit of an idiot.”

But Rachel’s sister Katy insisted they were perfectly matched. Rachel said: “She fought tirelessly to get us to agree to go on a date, and around June 2012, it finally happened.”

The proposal

Rachel loves Tudor history, so for her Christmas present in 2013, Kristoffer took her to Thornbury Castle where they were booked into a room Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn once stayed in.

After having dinner, the waiter brought them a selection of small cakes and inside one of them was the engagement ring. Rachel said: “It was the proposal to end all proposals and needless to say I said ‘Yes!’”

The wedding

Rachel went for a princess-style dress with a beaded bodice and a full skirt, while Kristoffer and the groomsmen were kitted out in brown tweed.

The bridesmaids wore cream vintage style backless wedding dresses with a gold lace overlay.

Rachel got ready at her parents’ house in Pentre with her bridesmaids, and two flower girls, while Kristoffer stayed in an apartment in Cardiff with his best men.

Rachel said the ceremony was beautiful, with music being provided by the Caradog String Quartet.

She walked down the aisle to Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, and after the ceremony they walked out to Marry You by Bruno Mars.

The evening reception included Johnny playing The Beatles’ I Will and Coldplay’s Us Against the World for the first dance.

Rachel said: “It was such an amazing day and we are so grateful to everyone who came to celebrate with us. We would do it all over again in a heartbeat.”

The honeymoon

The couple went to the Forest of Dean and are planning a big honeymoon to New York, Vegas and San Francisco next year.
