The Price of Pollution

It’s Sunday morning and after a bloody hard summer and a floody wet monsoon we in Delhi were looking forward to a pleasant few weeks before the fogs of Winter set in. But the pollution had other plans for us. We are all angry and frustrated and also very scared about these incredible toxic levels that we read about everyday. Some of us can afford purifiers, vacations, absence from work, but for most of us, this has become the crudest fait accompli possible.
Is it inevitable? Is there any way out? Just hear this little snippet from the interview. For the sake of your children, try to ignore the political biases. But here is one possible idea being suggested by someone who would have to be responsible for its successful execution. If a Rs 100/- were to be given per quintal of Paddy as compensation to the farmer for extra tillage, the situation could be largely improved. Now 17 Million tonnes in Punjab plus about 4.5 Million tonnes in Haryana x 100 bucks is about Rs 2200/- Crore. This will have a direct impact on the lives of approx 70 Million people in just Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. ( Not even including UP).
Shouldn’t this be a priority for Governance and a worthy political goal to pursue?
