One change to turn your life around

Dwelling in the past is poison. It will kill you. Surely. Slowly. By pretending to taste like nectar. Luring you again and again, with a thirst that will not be quenched. Until you are no more.

“The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there…” says L.P. Hartley

‘The past is not a land at all, not even a speck of dust … but a mirage’, say I. But that deadly mirage is no innocent trick of the eye.

The past is a lure, a siren song that has wrecked the ship of my life. I am not the only one. I am not an exception. Regardless, I sit amidst shards of wreckage, wondering how a nothing that does not exist, destroyed a very real something, with potential to become everything I dreamed.

Beware the lure of the past. Do not go there. Forget about being brave. Don’t be tempted by this forbidden apple. At least, Adam took a bite of something: fruit. You will take a bite of nothing.

You don’t have to believe me. Have faith in yourself. Look at you. How much have you progressed? Some. Could you have done more? Possibly. Could you have won the race of life and reached your goals? Probably. Could you have done it, constantly looking in the rear view mirror? No.

Your land of dreams beckons you. Get there. At least die trying. Why focus on the treacherous past? It is a vacuum that will suck you dry. Always. Don’t be fooled. Your story is not so unique.

Want to indulge in the past? It is a luxury with a price tag you cannot afford. It allures you. To fix blame on someone or something in the past. To fixate on what you could have been. What you should have done. If only… STOP.

Live in the Present. Live Here. Live Now. This is no esoteric mantra. If you do not focus on the here and now, you will focus on the there and then. To give up pursuits in the present in order to dwell on the past: to constantly remember, regret, reside in memories of the past — is an exercise in futility.

Get this. For yourself. The past is NOWHERE. The present is NOW HERE.

If you constantly remember to come back to the present, life will give you presents that fill you with joy. Because joy exists in the present. Life exists in the present. You breathe in the present. You live and love in the present.

Turn around from the past. Be present. The future will take care of itself.

Live. Love. Now. Here.
