Nearly, every one of us has heard of stainless steel or must have used it in some or the way. But, there is no doubt in saying that not everyone is familiar with its importance and its types. There are several benefits associated with stainless steel which in turn makes it one of the most demanding materials in the industrial sector. Well, on the other hand, if we talk about the types of stainless steel there are several types available like austenitic, duplex, super duplex stainless steel and more.

Among all these types of stainless steel duplex and super duplex is highly demanded material. However, there are many who do not know the difference between both the stainless steel types. Hence, this piece of article is for all those readers who are in need to know the difference among super duplex and duplex stainless steel. So, continue reading this article and know what makes both these stainless steel different.

Difference between super duplex and duplex stainless steel:

Duplex stainless steel

It is a popular material that is used in many industries. The designation of “duplex” comes with the biphasic structural constitution of the austenitic and ferritic phase of both in equal portions. This type of stainless steel is considered best and it is widely chosen over the austenitic and ferritic stainless steel because of its increased strength. It is considered twice as strong as the other metals. Because of its increased strength, the thinner sections can be easily created that in turn provide significant weight savings. All these properties and features make duplex stainless steel the popular choice for various pressure vessels and structural applications.

The ferritic part of this stainless steel offers good stress corrosion cracking resistance which in turn makes it a popular choice for process plants and hot water tanks. You can get this stainless steel is different grades and can be used for manufacturing various industrial equipment and products.

Super duplex stainless steel

Super duplex is also a part of duplex stainless steel that also has the same benefits but the main difference among both these stainless steel types is the higher amount of chromium as well as molybdenum content that offer super duplex stainless steel with increased corrosion resistance feature. This type of stainless steel is often used in the heat exchangers, oil and gas industry, chemical processing equipment, offshore platforms, pressure vessels, and boilers. It combines the best attributes of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel and offers outstanding strength as well as ductility with high corrosion resistance.

It is generally more complex and is highly alloyed material that offers high strength and corrosion resistance features than duplex stainless steel. Moreover, it is considered suitable for various demanding applications. Well, there are several advantages that super duplex stainless steel offers like:

• High strength as compared to austenitic and ferritic stainless steel which in turn leads to reduced weight in pressure vessels.

• Good Weldability and it is much better than the ferritic stainless steel

• Good toughness

• Excellent resistance to stress cracking

So, this was all about the duplex and super duplex stainless steel you must. However, both these stainless steel types are excellent and offer better performance.
