The Findings of School Experience Program
The picture is taken on the last observation in SMPN 73 Jakarta, they are my friends, Guru Pamong Matematika, my lecturer, Guru Pamong B. Inggris, headmaster of SMPN 73 Jakarta, and the Curriculum Staff.
During the School Experience Program in SMPN 73 Jakarta, there are many findings that I got from the observation in the classroom and interviewing the teacher. Not only that I also discuss my findings with my peers’ whether in the same school of observation or in the different school.
First, the most interesting finding from my observation is the differences between elementary students and junior high school students. Since in the last semester, I observed elementary students and now the students are observed by me is the junior high school but they are VII grade. They still in the transition time between elementary and junior high school, so their behavior in the class tend as well as students in the elementary school. However, the teacher in the classroom adapted their behavior but he also encouraged the students to have appropriate behavior. Then, he adapted learning activities in the classroom based on students’ learning style and the students not bored. Relax and serious is the teaching style of the teacher that I observed and it is similar to my ideal mathematics classroom.
He re-explained the materials step by step if the students did not understand about it and try to give the example from the low until the high level are the ways of teacher’s approaches in the classroom.
The second is something that I interested in the interviewing the teacher session is her ideal mathematical classroom, relax and serious. In the classroom and in the school, she is respected by students and she usually makes the question sheet by herself for problem-solving and the other exercise for her students, accordance with the syllabus. Because she thinks that make the questions for problem-solving is not easy because the problem can be a problem for some students or may not be a problem for some students and maybe it is the problem for all the students. So, the teacher must be capable in terms of choosing the question for problem-solving and it should be adapted to the students’ ability.
Furthermore, she usually makes a reflection and does the evaluation after the learning activities finished. So, she will know what the weakness and the strength of the learning activities today and forth.
She approaches the students in the class by adapted the students’ ability and learning style. If the students have the ability at the low level, she usually does one by one tutoring or looks like sharing session between students and the teacher. She will ask the students, what the learning difficulties are and so on.
Then, I discussed my finding with my peers, which is Nanang who observed teaching and learning activities in the SD YASPORBI I. after discussed it, I found some similarities between my findings and Nanang. The first similarity is the teacher in the school that we observed is a kind person and enjoyable. The second is the teacher use the textbook to give the students tasks or assignments. The third is mostly teacher care to the students’ needed and the teacher usually re-explains the materials if the students did not understand. The last similarity between my findings and peer’s finding is the teacher give more exercise to the students in order to students understand it and we found the problem-solving activities in the classroom.
