In the summer of 2023, a cinematic spectacle graced our screens, a spectacle that was not just a film, but a modern allegory, a reflection of Plato’s Cave. This was the Barbie movie, directed and co-written by Greta Gerwig.

The film was a dazzling display of technical prowess and tonal balance, a visual feast that served as both an escape and a call to arms. It was a modern-day allegory of Plato’s Cave, with Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, representing the prisoner who escapes the cave to discover a world beyond her own.

In Plato’s allegory, the cave represents the world as seen by those who are not aware of the theory of forms. The prisoners in the cave see only shadows of the real world, just as Barbie, in her perfect, pink-hued realm, sees only the idyllic world created for her. She is the most popular Barbie in Barbieland, living a life of blissful ignorance, much like the prisoners in the cave.
