Day 5: Career growth is in your hands and here is the formula
#CorporateSurvivalTips

Career growth means different things to different people. Getting a promotion, moving to a different field (domain, technology or area of business), higher salary, moving to a different location (local office to head office)
There are three main factors that define career growth. Opportunities, your own motivation, and skills that you carry. Let me make it as a formula.
Your career growth = Opportunity x Motivation x Skill. This is a multiplication not addition.
Opportunity: Where do you find opportunities? They are just around you. Either you create your own opportunity or wait for your organization to create one for you. It is always not true that you need to create your own start-up to nurture your idea. For example, you are keen on Machine Learning or Block chain and your organization is not doing anything in those areas. Then create few proof of concepts, present to your leadership team. May be next month you will end up heading that practice.
Motivation: Motivation is always internal. You are already motivated to do your current job. But then do you have enough motivation to take that next leap? Others can only inspire you. First thing you need to answer to get that extra motivation is why do you want that growth? What makes you unhappy with current situation? What are you losing from current job and what do you think you will gain with new opportunity? Answers to these questions can bring that additional motivation depending on how deep is your aspiration.
Skills: Do you have right skills to do your next job? Do not depend on your organization to do this for you. Skill building is not any organization’s main purpose. BCCI did not build Sachin Tendulkar or Kohli. They built their own skills. In the hurry of contributing more, many people keep the skill development as last or lost priority. Even world class players attend practice sessions before their matches.
Let’s come back to our formula now.
Best Case:
Opportunity = 10 (Opportunity available)
Motivation = 10 (highly motivated)
Skills = 10 (Fully skilled)
Growth = 1000
You can impagive people like MS Dhoni, PVV Sindhu in best case scenario.
Case 1:
Opportunity = 10
Motivation = 10
Skills = 5 (partially skilled)
Growth = 500 (50% reduction from best case)
Case 2:
Opportunity = 10
Motivation = 2 (very low motivation)
Skills = 10
Growth = 200 (80% reduction from best case)
Case 3:
Opportunity = 10
Motivation = 10
Skills = 0 (No skills)
Growth = 0 (No growth)
In case 3, there is an opportunity, you are highly motivated, but you do not have skills to do. Your growth is stalled.
Create your own numbers for your next career growth opportunity and work on next steps. All the very best!!!
