TikTok bans weight loss ads: my thoughts

I think we’re all very familiar with the weight loss ads that circulate around social media. Some of them come in the form of real results with real effort. However, others arrive in the form of dietary supplements and the encouragement for people to regularly skip meals in lieu of using these products instead.

To possibly no one’s surprise, the Kardashians are huge enforcers of them. Kim K can regularly be spotted promoting lollipops while her sisters encourage the use of vitamins, pills, powders and more to encourage people to skip meals to lose weight. However, what I’m sure they realize well enough is that these messages hit the younger demographic more than anyone else. The young girls who follow them on social media are being exposed to this absolute sham and are believing it. Now, this is bad because it promotes eating disorders. It encourages young girls to skip meals to lose weight and creates body dysmorphia.

These young girls are impressionable and see these ads as true and right and follow them to imitate the celebrities. But, as grown ass women, the celebrities who promote these products should know better than what profit margins show. We know they’re getting paid a handsome sum but intelligence and common sense should rank higher than that, no?

Considering all the heat Tik Tok has been under recently, I think this is a huge step in the right direction. Way to go for taking a stand where Instagram should have stood years ago. And props to Jameela Jamil for always pointing it out for us!
