I’ve learned that saying a simple ‘thank you’ can get you places. It can bring you new opportunities, new friends, new mentors, and probably things you never imagined.

As a UNITY Fellow, I attended the annual convention for the National Black Journalists Association in Minneapolis this past summer. I had no idea what to expect going into convention week and I was blown away by everything that was presented. The student newsroom was a blast, the conference workshops were resourceful, but most of all, the career fair was a delight!
I’ve heard people say “Oh, I’m like a kid in a candy shop,” when talking about going to their favorite places. Now imagine a funemployed college graduate being thrown into a massive career fair! I was awe-struck. I didn’t know where to start or how to maneuver my way through the maze.
As I worked my way around the hall, I eventually came to NBC’s area. I saw a lot of familiar faces in the booth but one stood out the most. It was the lady who had interviewed me several months ago in San Francisco. Of course, I didn’t get the position or else I wouldn’t have glanced at her awkwardly. She noticed me and to my surprise, came over, gave me a hug and said, “Good to see you.”
I updated her on my life and she wished me good luck for the future. And away I went to the other booths. I was a little shaken after seeing her but I was glad I did. It was almost like running into an ex…but not really.
As things were wrapping up at the career fair, I wanted to go back to the NBC booth and say bye to the people I knew. The lady (who interviewed me) saw me with a confused look on her face.
“Why’re you back? Do you need something?”
“Um…not really. I just wanted to say thanks before I left,” My palms were already sweating at this point. “You guys have been so helpful through everything and it’s great that you take time out of your busy lives to help me find jobs or positions that best suit my interest. It really means a lot.”
Thank god. I said it. Phew.
She smiled and said “that’s what we’re here for.”
As I began to walk away, she said, “Hey, come here. I want you to speak with someone.”
I went back and she whispered, “That’s the Assistant News Director of ______.” She pointed to a man who was in the middle of interviewing a young lady. “They’re hiring right now and I think you’ll be a good candidate. Google the company on your phone now and learn as much as you can.”
When it was my turn, she took me to the Asst. News Director and said very nice to things about me to him. We talked for a little bit and as usual, I exchanged my resume for his business card. As I started packing my bag, he stopped me and said, “You know, we’re looking to hire right away. If you’re really serious, let’s stay in touch.”
I smiled, thanked them and left. I was in disbelief. I figured if I hadn’t gone back to say thank you, this interview would have never happened. It was a wonderful opportunity that just came out of nowhere and I was so stunned by how quickly and easily everything had happened.
The following week, I got an email from the Assistant News Director regarding a second interview. I just couldn’t believe it.
That’s when I reminded myself that I am blessed. I am blessed with the best teachers, mentors, friends and family who really really care about me. This whole meeting started with a single thank you. That’s all it took. Two simple words of gratitude.
“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
