3 Reasons Dry Kibble is Bad for Pets

Naturally, our pets were never meant to eat processed or cooked foods however most pet food today is offered in a dry kibble form that is made this way. We at Raw Pet Food are here to show you the various ways that dry kibble could be doing more harm than good to your pets.
Removes Beneficial Enzymes
Unlike humans, pets do not have the ability to create their own digestive enzymes so they must acquire them from the food they eat. When food (like kibble) is brought to a temperature of 117 degrees Fahrenheit or more, the molecular structure of enzymes in the food is destroyed, removing all the beneficial enzymes your pets need for a healthy digestive tract. Without these important enzymes, your pet’s digestive system is not able to properly break down the nutrients in the food they eat and works twice as hard.
Important Nutrients Are Lost
Many dry kibble brands will claim their pet food provides all the key nutrients in your pet’s food, however, what they don’t tell you is that many of those nutrients are lost in the baking process. According to a 2003 USDA test on the effects of cooking on nutrient levels, it has been found that any amount of heat added to food will begin the nutrient degradation process. The higher the heat was set when baking, the more nutrients would be lost. Since most dry kibble goes through an extensive baking process and drying process with extreme pressure and high heats, most if not all the nutrients that were claimed to be in the food are lost. So when you are feeding your pet dry kibble, really what you are providing them is filler food without any nutrients to support healthy organ function.
Harmful Preservatives
While some dry kibble brands will use natural preservatives made from vitamin C or E, some may use synthetic products which can spell bad news for your pet’s health if it is not carefully observed. Toxic preservatives such as Ethoxyquin, Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are a few of the harmful preservatives commonly used in commercial pet foods. These chemicals have been shown to cause problems in the liver, blood and have certain cancer-causing compounds known to them but even so, commercial pet food companies are still using them. The problem is that pets will eat most anything you put in front of them as long as it smells good and dry kibble is no exception.
