Mindfulness meditation can help you feel calmer and more positive but did you know that it can also lead you to develop certain aspects of your personality?

Here are five qualities you can acquire if you practice mindfulness meditation regularly.

Non-Judgmental Attitude

When you observe your thoughts while meditating, you realize how you judge yourself and other people.

Recognizing those judgmental thoughts helps you become more aware of the judgmental thoughts that go through your mind during your daily life. You understand that these thoughts don’t achieve anything positive so it’s a good idea to let them float away as you do during meditation.

Meditation can therefore help you become a more tolerant person.

During meditation you may see just how harshly you judge yourself. This can lead you to become gentler with yourself, using your mental energy to encourage rather than criticize yourself.

It can be difficult to accept yourself just as you are. However, as you learn through meditation that you are much more than your thoughts, feelings and sensations, you’ll find it easier to accept yourself.

You’ll also discover that it becomes easier to accept other people without trying to change them.

Meditation can also bring you to an acceptance of your life as it is. If you struggle with feelings of discontentment and dissatisfaction, mindfulness meditation can help you reduce these feelings by leading you to be grateful for what you have and to celebrate what you’ve achieved in life so far.

During meditation you are curious about yourself. You observe your thoughts and emotions and the effects they have on your body.

In your daily life, you may become more curious about how and why people react in particular ways in certain situations. This may lead you to ask questions and achieve greater understanding of others.

Through meditation you realize your true worth as a person. You begin to treat yourself better and develop more self-respect.

You then begin to show more compassion for other people, animals and the environment as you discover through meditation how interconnected every living being is.

Less Driven

You were probably taught from an early age that it’s important to try hard in order to do well in life. On the other hand, you may also know that working long hours doesn’t make you happy.

Meditation teaches you that just being your true self is more important than doing lots of things. If you’re stressed and busy, you may miss opportunities that are in front of you or you may accomplish less than if you were relaxed and happy.

If you become calmer through meditation, you’re more likely to take the opportunities available to you and achieve more in less time. It might seem paradoxical but being less driven can lead to a more successful and fulfilling life.

Start Meditating Today

Mindfulness meditation can enhance your life in many ways. Start by sitting quietly and focusing on your breathing for just five or ten minutes each day. Over time, increase the amount of time spent meditating and notice the positive effects in your life.
