Unboxing Unbox Akron: July 2016

The July box for Unbox Akron is here! In lieu of an unboxing via Snapchat (like I’ve done in the past), I shared each item on Instagram over the weekend. Here’s a roundup of all the goodies. If you want to receive the next box, find out more at the end.

Growing up I loved anything and everything creative and colorful. And I still clearly do… When Roger said smARTStudio was working on a coloring book full of kids artwork, I almost burst into tears. I could imagine those kids feeling like superstars creating a piece of Akron-related art to go into a printed and bound book — which turned out AMAZING!
Go WILD at the Akron Zoo! I love this place: it’s right in the heart of Akron, they have a red panda(!!), and their interactive displays are cute and creative. Spend an hour or two there — or make a day of it. Unbox members received a ticket to the zoo and a tote bag.
Unbox Akron members received a Summit Peeks pin. I started the Twitter-based project in the spring. Each week, someone new takes over the account so we can get a peek at their Akron. (You can sign up here.) I can’t wait to see these pins out-and-about.
The National Hamburger Festival is coming up. Mark your calendar for August 13–14. Thanks to Unbox, members will have free admission.
Jean Henriott Trawick’s “Faces of Akron” piece hangs in Urban Eats. It features — you guessed it — faces of Akronites. Jean is full of wonderful artistic ideas. With the amazing things she’s already created, who knows what’s coming next? (We do know it’s going to be great.) One of this month’s postcards features Jean’s “Faces of Akron.”
The West Akron Baseball & Softball League is open to kids ages 5–18 in West Akron. The non-profit league includes boys youth baseball, girls youth softball and co-ed T-ball teams. Grab some sunflower seeds and play ball! The WABL logo is featured on this window decal.
Unbox Akron members received two tickets to their choice of Rubber City Shakespeare Company performance during the 2016–17 season. Which show do you want to see?
This exclusive sticker was in the July box. We’re all about sharing our hometown pride. Who else can’t get over the fact that the Cavs are NBA Champs?!
Local artist Jeremy Jenkins created the “Quantum Ghost” painting featured on the other postcard included in the box. It was his 2015 Akron Art Prize submission. In a somewhat badass move, he cut up the original artwork and gave the pieces to Unbox Akron members. (Don’t forget — Jeremy created the artwork that’s been featured on top of recent boxes.)

Tell me: • Who is your favorite artist in Akron? • Who serves up the best burger? • What Shakespeare story compares to your life? • Let me know in the comments below or tweet me!
