Listenig to the audibook “Peak”(about the science of expetise and deliberate practice). The biggest insight so far is that the idea that you will get better at things just by doing them long enough is wrong.
Unless you keep practicing outside of your comfort zone, consistently setting and achieving challenging goals, finding your boundaries and breaking through them — you will just stagnate and stay on the same level of skill.
Repetition makes your actions automatic, but it isn’t enough to make you better. Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.
Seems kind of obvious, but I needed to hear that. Also they keep stressing that your brain is plastic, so you can literally modify it to get a better ability to do things. “Talent” is a myth, it is not something you are born with, it is something you develop. So that’s inspiring.
