Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
The one museum I actually spent the entire day at
I am 99.99% sure that The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is the best museum I’ve been to (not 100% cause making grand claims makes me anxious). I arrived at the Museum at noon on a Tuesday after some other plans fell through. I was expecting to stay there for a couple of hours, and then find a chill place to read but to my surprise I ended up staying there till the museum closed at 5pm. I didn’t even see everything that I wanted to!
The museum had a variety of different collections. From artefacts from a variety of different ancient civilisations, to a moving photography collection called (un)expected families that featured a collection of many different types of families the MFA had it all.
Overview
The museum is right across the street from Northeastern University and has it’s own T stop on the green line. Very accessible! The entrance fee is definitely pricey ($$$) at was $25 for a regular adult ticket. I paid $23 for a student ticket, they basically just asked me where I went to school and I did not have to show an ID.
After purchasing my ticket, I entered the museum and checked in my backpack at the free coat check which was super nice. I had a book, my packed lunch, my water bottle and my jacket in my bag so it was good ditching that for a couple hours. Definitely helped my energy levels.
I walked to the visitor center to check out the map. I was happy to see that there were hourly tours at the museum that covered different collections. I waited 10 minutes in the rotunda for the Arts of the Ancient World tour where I learned so much about ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek societies. My favorite part was definitely the tour guide who was so enthusiastic and passionate about the subject. I think she made all the difference.
Towards the end of the 75 minute tour, I felt my stomach rumbling. After the tour, I headed back to coat check to grab my lunch that was in my bag. Thankfully it was a beautiful day, so I sat outside at one of the picnic tables and enjoyed my Garam Masala pasta.
I headed back in time for the 3pm Arts of the Americas tour which was also nice. After the tour, I visited the South Asian Art wing, and checked out some ~modern art~ until the museum closed. I left knowing that I will eventually come back.
Because the MFA is big, and I visited on a weekday, there were times where I felt like I was the only one in the exhibit. It was awesome. The tours also maxed out at about 10 people each which was nice.
If you’re a fan of art and history, I definitely recommend checking out this museum on your visit to Boston. It is also a great activity rainy or snowy day activity. If you want to dine at the museum there are plenty of options. There are four cafes at the museum, one of them being a fine dining restaurant.
