I know of two related instances.

  1. When I was in the Navy and drew shore patrol duty my “training” consisted of: If you feel you need to fire your gun, shoot at the ground never in the air. If the bullet goes up it will come down somewhere.
  2. One day we had rain/water leaks behind a wall strating in the ceiling. I crawled up into the attic but nothing serious seemed wrong but I positioned myself directly over the water stain and found a deformed bullet on the floor of the attic. Then I looked very carefully and could see a small hole in the roof; exactly in channel that directed rain water out and down :) where it would do the most damage :) Our neighbor was a Yahoo that used to go out and shoot his gun in the air on holidays!

After those lessons I have decided anybody, foreign or domestic, that celebrates by shooting bullets in the air is sub-human. Unfortunately there seems to be a plentiful supply of that.
