What to do when you want to do too many things

Don’t be this guy

Many people struggle to find something that excited them, something they want to pursue. But me, I had too many ambitions and dreams, I wanted to do it all. But soon I realized that you can’t be an Olympic athlete, and a great programmer, and a best selling author at the same time. You can be good at many things, but you can only be great at one.

“Success demands a singleness of purpose.”

So how does one get from wanting to do everything to mastering a single thing?

  1. Make a list in order of interest.

Choose the top 5 things you would like to pursue as a career and arrange them in order of interest

2. Abstract

Try to find similarities in the items in your list and note them down. If you like 10 different things at least 6–8 will have some common features, which is probably why you got interested in them in the first place, you were consciously or subconsciously attracted to that feature.

For example, you might like cinematography, animating, writing and drawing. The common feature in all those things is storytelling. Story telling is what you really like, all these things gave a way to quench your thirst for story telling.

Choose the category that has the most number of items from the top of your interests list.

3. Try

You will never be able to decide what you want to do, if you don’t try. Don’t listen to anyone, try and experience it for yourself. If you don’t find something enjoyable you can always go back and try something else, but if you never try, you will never get there.

It is ok to follow 2 career paths but more than that, I think is harmful.

I, after months of head scratching finally decided on, problem solving and storytelling.

Problem solving is my passion and storytelling is my hobby.
