I’m sorry but this is largely a jumble of platitudes and other generalist drivel. Your citations are also often not good — you have a link to a Daily Mail article for example. For those of you who may not know, the Daily Mail is a widely reviles newspaper in the UK for its racist, misogynistic slant on the news.

At its core though your article paints a picture of things getting generally harder and worse for men, which actually isn’t true. In terms of levels of mental illness, women are still by far the most afflicted, with two to three times the number of women in most western countries suffering from a severe mental health condition, than men. Yes, suicide rates are higher amongst men but that doesn’t necessarily correlate with higher rates of mental distress. It’s possible that men simply don’t get diagnosed, as they are typically far less likely to go to the doctor but this would merely help narrow the gap.

Furthermore, in western countries men still earn more than women across a range of industries — the gender pay gap is still not closed. Furthermore, you cite education as an example of how men are losing out because women are achieving higher grades. This doesn’t mean however that men are distressed about this, nor does it mean women are “achieving more” as a result of higher grades. More importantly though, women have long been achieving higher grades at school largely because western societies have put undue amounts of pressure on women to achieve and because women are more likely to internalise this pressure due to the unrealistic expectations thrust upon them from a young age. As a result they’re more likely to suffer stress and depressive illnesses such as eating disorders in their school years.

Educational achievement as measured by exams however shouldn’t be held up as a beacon of success. For both men and women, pressure to achieve certain grades and so on at school is actually not helpful for either gender and makes everyone worse off, male or female.

The sad truth is not that men are becoming marginalised or that women are “doing better” it’s that western society is screwing us all over by inducing capitalistic values of materialism, individualism, consumerism and narcissism. Everyone is losing out in this society and mental health rates continue to rocket, as levels of happiness decline. And actually women continue to bear the brunt of this as they continue to suffer higher levels of mental health problems than men. Women suffer more pressure now to conform to a range of unhealthy ideals than ever before, whilst being made to feel guilty by capitalist ideals about for example being a mother and staying at home to look after their children, while simultaneously being made to feel guilty about not wanting to be a mother — this is a pressure men never have to deal with.

Ultimately, yes men are being fucked over, but women more so.
