Fake News

Fake news is being spread like crazy by by all of us on social media! Since the recent presidential election, fake news has become more and more common. “News” articles spreading lies about celebrities, government officials and even everyday people have caught the attention of millions of people around the world.

I recently came across an article about a teen from a small town in Macedonia, who is making bank off creating and spreading fake news! It is crazy because he doesn’t even live in the country, yet he has captured the attention of millions of Americans, by sharing his fake stories. He claims to be making over 60 grand a year off these stories! Being in a town with an average annual salary of about $5000, that’s a whole lot of money. I wonder if he feels good about what he is doing… is this morally right? If something bad were to happen over some fake news article he posted, is he to blame?

Who’s to blame is the big question here. I think the people who share, retweet or believe the fake news are the ones who are helping it spread the most. The kid, Dimitri, who makes up the articles is also part of the blame because his goal is to make them widespread but he’s not telling people to believe him. That is why it is up to you to fact check and not believe everything you see on the internet or in magazines.

I do not think it is possible to completely eliminate fake news stories, but the spread of them could definitely be reduced. It’s our job to educate ourselves and become aware of what is real or fake and stop spreading these fake articles.
