I struggle with this one. As a founder of a company, I find it easier to lean on the weekly happy hour / bar crutch as a “cultural activity.” I also like to drink, but it’s just a once a week company event at the bar. We do have a kegerator in the office but it’s not used every day.
I think the answer is moderation. We’ve consciously organized company events (volunteering, for example) that have no alcohol, and there’s is absolutely no shaming of employees who don’t drink alcohol. Instead, we celebrate when they come to the bar with us.
Perhaps not enough, but it’s what we’re doing now.
