Great point. I think we owe this “innovation” to a lot of enterprise reporting tools, which shipped by default with 3D graphs like this one. That and the speedometers in dashboards (which I am yet to find a really good use for).

Another note is when limiting results in a pie chart or showing the top-5, the note should mention it. Quite often, the results include a selected top-x results, but the note/heading/annotation does not indicate so.
