It’s interesting that when we moved into the late nineties, alcoholism was replaced by anxiety or panic attacks, described in The Sopranos by Tony as “a can of ginger ale going off in my head.” Since the series was Mafia themed, people seemed more interested in the Mafia patina than the actual theme “Are panic attacks a reflection of someone who isn’t as macho as they they think they are — or other people think they are? As Tony said, “If anybody knew I had panic attacks, they’d kill me.” Is this the way most men see panic attacks? Are you less of a man? The same theme occurred in Wonderboys. Interesting how these themes become popular in movies first before we approach them — and discuss them — in real life.
