People should understand that you’re a writer because that’s the only thing you can be. Most of us are unhireable in any other profession. We probably couldn’t even make it as short order cooks. Writing is our only “found gift,” but it’s only a gift if we know that’s what it is, and realize gifts are discarded every day. If we’re writers it’s because we didn’t discard our gift. We kept it around for years, always remembering—and believing—that it’s the only gift we’ve ever wanted. That’s a writer.
