A great and timely article. I do think you dance around, without quite mentioning, one other, perhaps central piece of the grand experiment: the way individual accumulation of wealth evolved from being the goal of the economic system we chose to being the goal of everything we do. I wonder if such a disastrous experiment could have been conceived if we had chosen instead to make the well-being of society as a whole, or even the well-being of life on earth, the goal of our political economy instead?
