My Favorite Quotes About Mothers

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day (You’re welcome men). As you might have gathered, I am a pretty big fan of quotes. So in honor of the upcoming holiday, I thought I would share some of my favorites.

Realize that this is not an exhaustive list. There are probably hundreds of awesome quotes out there about moms. I am sure that once this gets published, I will find another or think of one I missed.

Because of my religious background and my firm belief that motherhood is next to godliness, many of these quotes will have a religious slant.

So without further ado, here they are:

A Mother’s Influence

“In all events, a mother can exert an influence unequaled by any other person in any other relationship. By the power of her example and teaching, her sons learn to respect womanhood and to incorporate discipline and high moral standards in their own lives. Her daughters learn to cultivate their own virtue and to stand up for what is right, again and again, however unpopular. A mother’s love and high expectations lead her children to act responsibly without excuses, to be serious about education and personal development, and to make ongoing contributions to the well-being of all around them.” -D Todd Christofferson

“Motherhood is the greatest potential influence either for good or ill in human life. The mother’s image is the first that stamps itself on the unwritten page of the young child’s mind. It is her caress that first awakens a sense of security; her kiss the first realization of affection; her sympathy and tenderness the first assurance that there is love in the world.” -David O. McKay

“When the real history of mankind is fully disclosed, will it feature the echoes of gunfire or the shaping sound of lullabies? The great armistices made by military men or the peacemaking of women in homes and in neighborhoods? Will what happened in cradles and kitchens prove to be more controlling than what happened in congresses?” -Neal A Maxwell

“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” -Abraham Lincoln

God’s Helper

“God could not be everywhere, and therfore he made mothers.” -Anonymous

Young Mothers

“In speaking of mothers generally, I especially wish to praise and encourage young mothers. The work of a mother is hard, too often unheralded work. The young years are often those when either husband or wife — or both — may still be in school or in those earliest and leanest stages of developing the husband’s breadwinning capacities. Finances fluctuate daily between low and nonexistent. The apartment is usually decorated in one of two smart designs — Deseret Industries provincial or early Mother Hubbard. The car, if there is one, runs on smooth tires and an empty tank. But with night feedings and night teethings, often the greatest challenge of all for a young mother is simply fatigue. Through these years, mothers go longer on less sleep and give more to others with less personal renewal for themselves than any other group I know at any other time in life. It is not surprising when the shadows under their eyes sometimes vaguely resemble the state of Rhode Island…

Do the best you can through these years, but whatever else you do, cherish that role that is so uniquely yours and for which heaven itself sends angels to watch over you and your little ones…

Mothers, we acknowledge and esteem your faith in every footstep. Please know that it is worth it then, now, and forever.” -Jeffrey R. Holland

A Mother’s Love

“…No love in mortality comes closer to approximating the pure love of Jesus Christ than the selfless love a devoted mother has for her child.” -Jeffrey R Holland

A Mother’s Prayer

“There are few things more powerful than the prayers of a righteous mother.” -Boyd K. Packer

Discouraged Mother

“To all mothers in every circumstance, including those who struggle — and all will — I say, ‘Be peaceful. Believe in God and yourself. You are doing better than you think you are.” -Jeffrey R Holland

“There’s no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one.” -Jill Churchill

The Essence of Womanhood

“Motherhood is more than bearing children…It is the essence of who we are as women.” -Sheri L Dew

“Motherhood is not a hobby, it is a calling. It is not something to do if you can squeeze the time in. It is what God gave you the time for.” -Neil L Anderson

Enjoy Every Moment

“If you are still in the process of raising children, be aware that the tiny fingerprints that show up on almost every newly cleaned surface, the toys scattered about the house, the piles and piles of laundry to be tackled will disappear all too soon and that you will — to your surprise — miss them profoundly.” -Thomas S Monson
