As a result I find myself doing this a lot whenever I come across a link, right click -> open in new tab/window or use the shortcut ( command + click ) . It makes me feel in control of the interface.

On OSX (probably the same on Windows): Command-Click opens in new [window|tab] every time. Wether new window or tab depens on your browser settings. Not more work, reliable, puts user in control.
