Honest confession: I didn’t come up with the word Mindscape. I came up with the concept and a friend of mine spontaneously gave it its name (LabNco). I will forever be thankful for this fruitful contribution.

Mindscape is simply: the Landscape of the Mind.

I’ve been thinking about this for so long that it’s even hard for me to trace back where the idea originally came from, but the brain is pretty good at rationalizing things. Over time, I ended up refining the concept using a mix of old philosophies and practical aspects.

Independently of where you lie on the spiritual spectrum, one fact is indisputable: humans experience consciousness. While defining consciousness is itself an endeavor, I adhere to this overly simplistic definition: consciousness encompasses the feeling of emotions and senses, and the thoughts of our mind. Obviously, many things derive from this and let’s just agree to disagree if you have your own take on the question.

Once you start to consider this duality of life: the world in which the body lives and the world in which the mind lives, a very interesting idea takes shape. While we have been able to measure, describe, and picture the physical world from the earliest of human history, it has been much harder to do so with the mind. Yet, when we think about it, our mind’s experience is a major part of our human existence.

We exist both in a physical and a conscious world, at the same time, and we spent a great deal of time mapping the physical one. What if we begin mapping the second.

Using biometrics, we now have a way to monitor the brain, the nervous system, and facial expressions as we go about our daily lives, this is how we map our Landscape of the Mind.

A Mindscaper in the wild

And this is what the Mindscape Initiative is about. Our goal is to monitor the experience of the mind as we evolve in the physical world and understand how these two dimensions of the experience mix and interact. If we’re lucky, we might even find ways to use this knowledge to improve the human condition and experience.

Join us to participate and map the Mindscape.
