AI-generated art has been around for years becoming only recently the latest trend in the world of digital art, and it’s changing the way we think about art and we use it.

The number of artists that use AI to create and generate new artworks (and movies!) is rising — till winning prizes.

In Web3, NFT projects like AI Nightbirds or Artsy Monke, both derivative of their most popular big brothers, Moonbird and Bored Apes respectively, are also examples of the opportunity AI Art represents nowadays.

AI Art generators have also become more accessible in recent months, with no technical knowledge required to use them and prices low enough to make them affordable for indie authors that want to tell stories in a more immersive way.

These tools represent indeed a pivoting resource for storytellers who want their stories to be more engaging and attractive for the web3 community, but that might lack the resources to create the artwork or outsource it.

Some authors from Readl’s community are actually already experimenting with AI art for their book covers or short stories and we are very excited to see what the community will come up with when Readl Stories will be live!

The Childseeker’s War NFT Bookmark project

To get ready for Readl Stories launch, we tried out different tools to see how this innovative process worked.

These tools represent indeed a pivoting resource for storytellers who want their stories to be more engaging and attractive for the web3 community, but that might lack the resources to create the artwork or outsource it.

We used the prompt “The book of the future, illustration, unreal engine” to run an objective comparison.

And this is what the tools came up with.

Let's meet some of the most used AI Art generators

Midjourney

Midjourney is a research lab that produces an artificial intelligence program that creates images from textual descriptions. The tool is currently in open beta, which it entered on July 12, 2022.

What we liked: comes with 25 free credits (+10 refills every month) and everyone can install Midjourney’s bot on their own Discord server.

What we didn’t like: if you are not a Paid Member, you have no commercial rights to the images you create.

Dream Studio

DreamStudio is the official team interface and API for Stable Diffusion. Entering a textual prompt in DreamStudio’s interface generates images in just a few seconds. The app gives 50 free uses to new users who sign up with an email address.

What we liked: very user-friendly interface and 50 credits to try out the software.

What we didn’t like: the AI doesn’t generate detailed images like Midjourney or Dall-E2

DALL• E 2

DALL·E 2 is probably the software that made AI Art famous in the last few months.

What we liked: the dashboard makes the editing and variations generation easier than Mid journey (that works only on Discord). It also lets you upload an image and generate variations of it.

What we didn’t like: you need to sign up for the waiting list which can take up to a few weeks.

StarryAI

Starry AI It’s an app that is probably the most user-friendly option for AI-generated art. It is the only one that also has a mobile app for both, Android and iOS.

What we liked: the option to create images on the go with its app and the fact you can choose a style to start with. It seems it also refills 5 credits per day which might be good for sporadic use.

What we didn’t like: the details are not so clean like with the other software.

Is AI Art here to stay?

It is unlikely that artificial intelligence will ever replace completely human visual art, as there are vital differences between human and machine art. However, there is no doubt that there is a future for AI-generated art: as technology continues to progress, more and more people will be able to create immersive worlds and stories with the help of tools like those we tried in this article.

We believe AI Art is starting to play a crucial role in web3 storytelling and we can’t wait to experience what comes next!
