I tend to look at it this way:

Heavier taxation would produce a welfare state. Most people don’t do that well when handed free money. Idealists like to believe people bloom in a welfare state…so much leisure time, so many interesting things to do!

Sure, it might go that way for some people. And they would end up caring for the majority of people who enjoy being lazy. But at least somebody would be employed!
