My own letter, sent to President Obama:
Mr President, the measures taken by local law enforcement against the anti-DAPL protesters are grossly unacceptable. They’re blasting people with water cannons in sub-freezing weather, for gods’ sakes!
As much as you’d like to “let things play out,” that’s not an acceptable option anymore. People will die if this continues. This affects Indian land, so issue an executive order to stop the drilling until this dispute can be peacefully resolved in court. Do like your predecessor, President Eisenhower, and get the South Dakota National Guard out there to keep the peace until that can happen.
I know you don’t have much time left in office, sir, and that your successor is likely to crap all over whatever measures you take in these final days. But please: buy the tribe whatever time you can. Let that be your legacy — that you did all you could.
