What Should You Be Doing?
What should you spend your time doing? Not what can you do or what will you (likely) do but what SHOULD you do?
It’s a seemingly simple question that’s exceedingly hard for many to answer.
Here’s my answer: Do work that makes me feel good.
Before you sneer at the hollow facade of selfishness, let me add one more line.
I’ve found the that work that makes me feel the best is work that facilitates two great people becoming two great friends.
Nothing makes me feel better.
I got a text message last night. It read
“I was just thinking of what you have created. I love life, always have, but when I moved back to SLC I was kinda sad, I missed something. I think Beehive (Sport and Social Club) provided that missing link. I have bonded better with friends that I never thought possible.”
That felt good. Better than any meeting I’ve ever been to. Better than any drug I’ve taken too.
So what does this all mean? Well here are two thoughts to get us started:
1. Focus your time on good/great people. That doesn’t necessarily mean successful. It means loyal, caring and friendly.
These are the people who you want to be connecting. Their bonds are stronger and their impact is wider.
2. Find a conduit for creating friendships. Mine has been sports. Yours can be music or board games or really just about anything.
You just have to be passionate about whatever it is. Then create some place/way that people can come together around that shared interest.
3. Use the “Great People — ->Great Friendships” as a criteria for doing the right kind of work each day.
If whatever you’re doing isn’t directly building a platform to connect people.
Stop. And do something that does.
