Huamn resource planning refers to the process of forecasting the future requirements of a HR department within an organization. Human resource planning is also involved in the process of determining as to how the already existing human resources capacity of the organization can be optimally used in the conducting various functions.

Some of the major features or the steps of human resource planning processes are explained in the below paragraphs:

#1. Present status of HR supply

The first major step towards human resource planning program is the assessment of the current human resources availability in the organization. Once the current HR resources within an organization has been identified, then follows the next step as to how to channelize the same in a proper way. It usually includes a proper and comprehensive study of the HR strength within the organization.

#2. Future demand of HR

The next big step involved in the system of human resource planning processes is the understanding and studying the future demands of the HR within an organization. A proper analysis of the future workforce and its overall requirement is the next step. All the known variables within an organization such as attrition, foreseeable vacancies, lay-offs and others — all are taken into consideration while determining the future HR demands. Further, other unknown variables like resignations, transfers and others are also included in the scope of analysis.

#3. Demand forecast

The next step involved in a human resource planning process is to match the current supply with the possible future demand of the HR and thereby create a proper demand forecast. It is also essential to understand the business strategy and objectives in the long-run, so that demand forecast is aligned to proper organizational goals.

4. HR Sourcing Strategy and Implementation

The last but not the least step in the human resource planning process is the fact that — after reviewing the gaps in HR supply and others, the firm will develop proper plans in order to meet these gaps as per demand forecast that has been created by them. This often includes conducting communication programmes, talent acquisition, talent development and others. The plans once curated, are implemented taking into confidence senior management so as to make the processes smooth and efficient.
