History of Meme Assignment
The 2016 Miss Universe pageant was a great time for the meme community and social media roared with anger, tears, smiles and laughter…all thanks to Steve Harvey. The meme of choice that i will be discussing is one of Steve Harveys face and at the top it says “Happy Friday” and at the bottom it says “Wait Sorry, It’s Monday.” In order to understand the meme we need to have an understanding of where this meme came from and the history behind it. Although this was over a year ago, this meme is still relevant today. Steve Harvey was the Miss Universe 2016 Host and the show was smooth sailing with beautiful women from around the world walking through the stage, answering questions and of course sporting top of the line gowns. It finally came down to the last two finalists, Miss Colombia — Ariadna Gutierrez, and Miss Phillipines — Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. The winner was then announced, Miss Colombia had won and was taking the crown home and making Colombia proud. Things quickly took a turn and started going down hill. As the applause were heard, hugs and praises given to the new Miss Universe we hear Steve Harvey say “Okay folks, I have to apologize. The first runner-up is Colombia. Listen folks, let me just take control of this. This is exactly what’s on the card,I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake. It is my mistake.”
This mistake took social media on a roller coaster ride. This simple mistake caused uproar for both Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines supporters; for those who simple didn’t care, they had a field day and the media ate it up. This was a prime time for meme’s, for the following couple of weeks memes of Steve Harvey surfed he media. From that point on any simple mistake people said by individuals would be followed with mimicking Steve Harvey. This mistake by Steve Harvey was now used for mimicking and comical purposes when people made simple mistakes and everyone understood the connotation behind the words “Okay folks, i have to apologize…horrible mistake. It is my mistake.” Still a year later we all very well remember this mistake that made international media.
Lets fast forward to a year later, the 2017 Miss Universe Pageant; guess who the host is? non other than Steve Harvey. You would think his pageant hosting career would be done, well it looks like he was coming back for round two. He was no scared to make fun at himself for the mistake he had made a year ago and definitely was not shy about it on the stage. According to The Washington Post, the show started with a pretaped bit where Harvey planned his escape incase he messed up again. By doing this, it kind of down plays the jokes the media has been building up; he laughed at himself first which definitely helped his case. Although he did not make a mistake this year, memes about his mistake are still relevent today.
