What Buhari Now Knows About Nigeria
Back when Jonathan was president, Buhari made all the challenges that faced Nigeria at the time seem so simplistic — having zero empathy for the silent frustration Jonathan faced in Aso rock but couldn't say a thing about.
Yes Jonathan made a lot of terrible mistakes — did a lot of things wrong, allowed every and anyone access to the national treasury — people were stealing public funds like its running out of fashion.
Yes Jonathan’s government managed to create niger-delta-militant millionaires who could neither read nor write, whose only explanation for their wealth was association with government.
Yes Boko Haram was more in charge of Nigeria than Jonathan was and corruption was the order of the day.
The economist even published an article calling Jonathan an “ineffectual Buffoon”. Many Nigerians with no respect for the office he occupied, called Jonathan all sorts of derogatory names including — clueless fool.
Two years into the messiah of Nigeria’s time as president — the economy is sinking into further negatives worse than the clueless-ineffectual buffoon left it. Still there are no policies to set the economy straight.
This government is more wasteful than the previous one, people are stealing monies and nothing is happening, people are cutting grass with 150 million Naira in the IDP, someone stole funds for feeding the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and still has his job. The Nigerian military “accidentally” bombed the IDP camp-leaving 100 people dead and 120 people seriously injured and the president didn’t see it necessary to visit the disaster sites. Yet Nigerians are not screaming, cursing and deeming him insensitive.
The state house spent N18.9M in 2016 for water charges this year the president is proposing N76.4M.
The state house had a budget of N10.2M for the purchase of newspaper in 2016, this year president Buhari proposed N28.3M for budget approval.
Last year the state house spent N96.6M on food, this year N123.2M is the budget.
In 2016, the state house spent N6.3M on cooking gas, this year the budget presented by the president estimates cooking gas at N21.6M for the year.
What is the justification for these allocations and increase?
While it was so easy for Buhari to call Jonathan all sorts of names and declare him wasteful, corrupt and unable to manage the affair of the country. It is becoming apparent that Buhari himself has in less than two years proved to be worse than Jonathan.
“Nigerians are about to learn that there is a level of incompetence that is worse than corruption”- Chuba Ezekwesili
What Buhari now knows for sure about stirring this complicated ship called Nigeria is that — it is too complex to manage and a government can easily be hijacked by the theives!
