The “I Don’t Feel Like It” Fallacy

This is great! There are numerous days when I “don’t feel like” exercising, and I usually chalk it up to decreased motivation/willpower. I sigh, skip the scheduled workout, and beg myself to do it tomorrow. But if I really stop to think about why I don’t feel like it that day, I realize it’s not because I don’t want to exercise, but because I’m bored with that particular exercise! Maybe I’d rather go outside for a run, lift weights at the gym, play a dance video game, get some friends together and play a casual sport, go for a walk, rollerblade, ride my bike, etc. There’s always at least one thing that counts as exercise that I do want to do even when I think I don’t want to work out that day. That says a lot about how important it is to understand the underlying reason behind a lack of motivation!
