Three questions that is!

As a teacher and a coach, the offseason is so crucial for developing positive relationships with students or athletes.

The offseason? As a teacher, it’s the time you invest in students during musicals, band concerts, sporting events, and community events. As a coach, it’s the offseason. At non-sporting events, weight room sessions, and out of season school functions.

I have found that asking three quality questions that take about 15 minutes really enables the students and athletes to open up. Having the students and athletes understand that you care about them more than just x’s and o’s or math facts provides a foundation for perseverance and success.

Question 1: What are your strengths? (Pertaining to a specific sport, class, or in general)

Question 2: What are your weaknesses or items you need to work on? (Pertaining to a specific sport, class, or in general)

Question 3: Where do you see yourself as a member of this team or in this class?

All three of these questions require honest input by the student or athlete followed by an honest assessment by the instructor or coach. When these facts and opinions get out in the open, there are less opportunities for resentment and misunderstanding by students and teachers or athletes and coaches during the season or school day.

Ask away!
