ACTIVISTS FROM RECLAIM PRIDE COALITION DELIVER DEMANDS REGARDING THE NYC PRIDE MARCH TO CITY OFFICIALS, HERITAGE OF PRIDE
A group of activists from the Reclaim Pride Coalition delivered a list of demands to city officials, including Mayor de Blasio, the New York Police Department Commissioner James O’ Neill, and Heritage of Pride regarding the 2018 New York City Pride March. Heritage of Pride organizes the annual NYC Pride March.
The Reclaim Pride Coalition (RPC) is a group of NYC organizations and individuals who are fighting to reclaim the NYC Pride March so that it better represents the LGBTQ community. We are currently primarily made up of individuals and organizations that marched together in the 2017 Pride March as the Resistance contingent, including ACT UP, Rise and Remand, Democratic Socialists of America, and Jewish Voice for Peace NY, among others. Additional groups and individuals will be joining RPC in the coming weeks.
RPC seeks to forge a community response to the historic and ongoing problems with Heritage of Pride (HOP) and the Manhattan Pride March, which have spanned decades, and include corporate saturation, unnecessary restrictions, and excessive police presence, as well as new and unacceptable changes to the March made by HOP since last year.
“Our organization is working towards our vision of a NYC Pride that reflects our community’s heritage of activism as opposed to the Pride March’s current state of commercial saturation and excessive police presence,” said Natalie James, organizer with NYC-Democratic Socialists of America Queer Caucus and the Reclaim Pride Coalition, who helped deliver the demands.
